Learners Explore History and Culture on Berlin Residential
Learners recently enjoyed an unforgettable residential visit to Berlin, giving them the opportunity to explore one of Europe's most fascinating cities while bringing their classroom learning to life. After arriving in Germany, learners settled into their hotel before embarking on a packed programme of historical and cultural visits across the city.
One of the first stops was the Berlin Wall Memorial, where learners learned about the division of East and West Germany and the impact it had on people's lives. This was followed by a visit to the DDR Museum, which provided a fascinating insight into daily life in Communist East Berlin.
The trip also included visits to some of Berlin's most iconic landmarks. Learners explored the Reichstag, home to the German Parliament, and visited the famous Brandenburg Gate, discovering more about the city's rich history and its role in shaping modern Europe.
A particularly thought-provoking part of the visit saw learners explore the Palace of Tears, where they learned about the difficulties faced by families separated by the Berlin Wall. They also visited the Holocaust Memorial before travelling to Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp. Throughout the visit, our learners were incredibly reflective, engaged and respectful as they learned about the experiences of those affected by some of the most significant events of the twentieth century.
The group's final evening included a visit to the Stasi Museum, where learners developed their understanding of life under surveillance in East Germany and the treatment of political prisoners during the Cold War.
Alongside the educational visits, learners also had opportunities to experience modern Berlin and sample local culture, helping them build independence and confidence away from home.
Throughout the trip, our learners represented Martin High brilliantly. They approached every experience with curiosity, and maturity, making the most of an unforgettable visit.
